The target of SWAM projects is to support the geographical locations that were highly impacted from the influx of Syrian refugees through upgrading the solid waste management infrastructure. The program is projected to complete by the end of the year 2020.
As such, the following projects were designed:
- Construction/Upgrade of MBTs and sanitary landfills in the following areas:
- Srar, Akkkar (Construction of MBT and landfill): The Environmental Impact Assessment study for both the MBT and landfill is still pending approval from the Ministry of Environment. However, construction works are still ongoing for the entire facility
- Baalbeck (Upgrade of MBT and construction of landfill): The MBT is undergoing upgrade in order to accommodate more quantities of waste (300t/day instead of 150t/day). The construction of the landfill is ongoing.
- Zahle (Upgrade of MBT): The MBT was upgraded through the addition of new equipment and the composting platform.
- Joub Jannine (Supply of equipment for MBT and construction of landfill): This activity has been completed and the facility will start operations soon.
