Mission

  • Integrated treatment of the municipal solid waste;
  • Working towards closing open dumps and eliminating related health and environmental risks;
  • Recover valuable materials that can be recycled;
  • Prevent and control environmental emissions from mismanagement of waste;
  • Produce compost like output that can be utilized.

The actions will directly address the medium and longer-term needs of Lebanese communities affected by the high concentration of Syrian refugees for increased and improved waste disposal services, by building and upgrading SWM infrastructure and equipment at a local level and by enhancing the overall management capacity of local administrations i.e. Municipalities in the SWM sector.

Vision

  • 7 new sanitary landfills will be constructed;

  • Our facilities will be able to treat approximately 60% of SW generated in the country;
  • The institutional capacities of all targeted administrative units (i.e. municipalities and/or unions of municipalities) will be upgraded;
  • Potential risks and hazards at SWM facilities in the project regions will be minimized;
  • New SWM policies and strategies based on an adequate legal framework will be initiated;
  • New instruments for a sustainable cost recovery of the SWM system will be developed and applied;
  • Jobs will be created in the local market and competitiveness in the SWM sector enhanced;
  • The quantity of waste going to the landfills will be considerably reduced;
  • Stakeholders in SWM will be able to offer professional and more efficient services;
  • The projects’ environmental impacts will be positive as the intervention will assist Lebanon in managing the compounding negative effects of the refugee influx on the environment that has resulted in an increased demand for resources;
  • The economic impact will be positive as investments are being made in rural areas and later through the O&M which will lead into creating jobs for the locals and for the refugees. This will also progressively contribute to the green economy by promoting investments and job creation in the recycling business;
  • The project will have a positive effect on gender equality as it will facilitate public service provisions for most vulnerable families that might otherwise not be able to do so, in particular, the provision of solid-waste related services. Access to SWM services to women will be promoted under this project by expanding its outreach to households in which women have traditionally a critical role to play when it comes to solid-waste disposal (e.g. rolling up solid waste collection and sorting facilities, awareness campaign at the household level);
  • By working directly with Local Authorities and their capacities, the project will significantly contribute to good governance and support Lebanese authorities in their management of local assets and services. In addition, community empowerment activities will engage citizens and refugees in the identification of needs and possible solutions to the challenges faced by affected areas. Through its efforts to mitigate the impact of the influx of refugees the project will assist in defusing potential tension between refugees and vulnerable communities and positively affect refugee protection and conditions;
